NPCs

Xindeler is inhabited by non-player characters with their own stories, roles and motivations. As the AI NPC Framework (AURORA) develops, these characters will gain persistent memory, dynamic relationships and the ability to generate their own quests.

The detailed lore of each NPC — their history, motivations, relationships and secrets — is part of the content that is revealed progressively in the game.

NPC Types

Merchants

They buy and sell items according to their specialization. A hunter sells weapons and hunting supplies; an herbalist sells consumables and ingredients. Merchants do not sell outside their area of specialization.

Airship Captains

Some NPCs like Orly Skiffback operate air transport routes between settlements. Routes are dynamic and may change based on the state of the world.

Quest Givers

NPCs generate quests based on their needs and the state of the world around them. A farmer may ask for help with creatures threatening their harvest; a merchant may need an escort for a dangerous route.

Hirelings

Some NPCs can be hired as temporary companions, with a time limit. They join the player's group and actively participate in combat.

AURORA — The Future of NPCs

Project AURORA is the system that will give Xindeler's NPCs unprecedented depth:

  • Persistent memory of interactions with players
  • Social relationships with other NPCs (friendship, rivalry, family)
  • Complete life cycle (birth, aging, death, inheritance)
  • Dynamic economy of their own
  • Autonomous quest generation based on their real needs

AURORA is in active planning. See the Roadmap for more information.
